Completed in 2013, the residence is defined by a series of geometric volumes and elevated concrete podiums that shape and organise space while dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior living. Inspired by the vastness of the site, the architecture embraces openness and flow, allowing the home to respond organically to its environment. Excavated quartzite from the site itself was repurposed into gabion walls and stone cladding, grounding the structure firmly within the landscape.
The material palette is deliberately restrained—raw concrete, rusted steel, and natural stone—expressed in their purest form. This authentic and uncompromising use of materials earned the residence national recognition, winning the 2013 Lafarge Award for Best Architectural Use of Decorative Concrete, as well as the overall award for Best Concrete Work in South Africa.
Internally, the home is curated by M Square Lifestyle Design, where spatial flow is enhanced through layered textures and natural finishes. In-situ concrete, quartzite, and mild steel are complemented by refined furnishings from global design brands, creating a warm yet contemporary living environment that balances architectural strength with comfort.
A dramatic double-volume entrance introduces the home, framed by a bridge linking the upper-level bedrooms and a sculptural, see-through concrete staircase set against a backlit perforated steel wall. Living areas are designed for seamless entertaining, with an open-plan kitchen and dining space flowing onto a lanai through frameless folding doors. This outdoor living zone—complete with a sunken jacuzzi—sits between a pool and a stone-clad wall that filters the western sun, creating a private, sheltered retreat.
Upstairs, four en-suite bedrooms offer privacy and elevated views, each with its own balcony. Three bedrooms occupy the western wing, while the master suite is positioned independently on the eastern side, reinforcing exclusivity and spatial separation.
